About EA

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH WE LIVE, ONE PROJECT AT A TIME®
President's Message

Dear Friends:

What makes EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC different than the universe of other environmental and engineering firms out there? To sum it up in one sentence, we are at our best when confronted by complex problems with compound technical and management challenges, most often requiring an integrated, interdisciplinary approach. In fact, we thrive on these types of projects, big or small, where EA can add value through first understanding the varied project challenges, then systematically peeling back the onion, so to speak, and making progress toward our client goals.

I credit our heritage as a scientific consulting firm, dealing with ill-defined problems nearly five decades ago, to putting EA on the path to this differentiation today. One of EA’s Core Values (Openness) in its broadest sense, stemmed from that scientific beginning and is now deeply ingrained within our culture. Our openness compels us to define problems deeply, analyze objectively, understand all viewpoints well, communicate respectfully, and generate ideas prolifically. From our founding, we have now developed an integration competence across the professional disciplines of engineering, science, and technology, yielding what I believe is a distinct ability to responsively address the complex challenges that face our clients today. In addition, what further separates EA is our capability, indeed our passion, to manage all of this efficiently, with “prudence” and a knack for doing more with less.

As a 100% employee-owned public benefit corporation, the future is bright for EA. We are healthy and growing, a testament to the confidence our clients and employees have in us. With environmental sustainability on front stage, combined with an increasingly resource-constrained world, our services—particularly the distinct way those services are delivered—will grow in demand. I look forward to exciting times ahead!

Thank you for visiting our website.

Sincerely,

Ian D. MacFarlane
President and Chief Executive Officer
EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC

Our History and Commitment

EA was founded in 1973 as Ecological Analysts, Inc., by Dr. Loren Jensen, a professor at Johns Hopkins University. The original staff consisted of fisheries biologists, helping electrical utilities achieve compliance with new environmental regulations. Over time, EA diversified, adding more advanced scientific, engineering, and technology capabilities to keep pace with changing client needs, regulatory demands, and public concerns.

Today, EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC provides a broad range of environmental science and engineering solutions to a diverse customer base including federal and state government agencies, municipalities, private industry, and non-profit organizations.

We have completed more than 100,000 environmental projects and performed more than $3 billion of services worldwide. Engineering News-Record consistently ranks EA among America’s Top 200 Environmental Firms, a testament to the business we earn from our clients as a result of the quality, cost-effectiveness, timeliness, and responsiveness of our service.

When we were still a one office, single service firm, Dr. Jensen pointed out, “The challenge before us is to make a business out of science, without compromising the principles or inherent ground rules of either.” That is precisely what EA set out to accomplish…and what we continue to do every day.

1970s

In 1973, Dr. Loren Jensen founded Ecological Analysts, Inc. near Baltimore, Maryland to provide specialty biological consulting services to the power industry. EA also opens its first office outside Maryland in New York State to serve clients in the Hudson River Valley. EA’s staff grew to 150 full-time professionals, comprised largely of fisheries biologists.

1980s

EA grew steadily to meet the needs of a growing client base and expanding environmental regulations. We opened a Chicago, Illinois office to support our Midwest clients, and opened an Analytical Chemistry Laboratory and Ecotoxicology Laboratory in Sparks, Maryland, to focus on the testing of wastewater treatment plant effluents and municipal sludges. The firm then established an office in Lincoln, Nebraska to provide additional support to its mid-western clients—our employee count reached 250 nationwide. The firm introduced its new name (EA Engineering, Science, & Technology, Inc.) and logo to reflect the breadth of our services, ranging from ecological studies to full-scale subsurface investigations and remedial engineering. EA opened its Corporate Headquarters in Hunt Valley, Maryland and became publicly traded on the NASDAQ exchange. At the end of the decade, offices were opened in Dallas, Texas, and Seattle, Washington to support clients in the U.S. Southeast and Pacific Northwest.

1990s

EA continued its geographic growth by establishing offices in Fairbanks, Alaska and Hawaii to support various contracts for the U.S. Department of Defense. Our projects then spanned all 50 states and involved a comprehensive array of environmental services. In 1994, EA opened an office on the U.S. territory of Guam to support military and commercial clients locally and throughout the Pacific Rim. We then expanded into New England, opening an office in Massachusetts and, toward the end of the decade, opened a second New York office in Syracuse to meet the demands for services in upstate New York. In 1999, EA established an office in Warwick, Rhode Island to support its clients in southern New England.

2000s

To position the company for stable, long-term growth, EA became an employee-owned firm through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Ian MacFarlane, a 20-year EA veteran at the time, was named President, taking over from EA’s founder Dr. Loren Jensen, who became Chairman. The firm continued its regional expansion by opening offices in Baltimore City, Edgewood, and Ocean Pines, Maryland, allowing EA better access to its Eastern Shore clients. We also expanded our Southwest operations through the opening of an office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which quickly grew to 10 full-time professionals through contracts with federal, state, municipal, and commercial clients. The decade closed out with the implementation of a Corporate Sustainability Program that finalized sustainability performance metrics to be assessed annually going forward. EA unveiled an additional logo to symbolize its commitment to sustainable practices.

2010s

This decade saw EA continue to expand and reinforce its position as an established ESOP. The firm acquired Blumen Consulting Group, Inc., a Kirkland, Washington-based planning and environmental review firm. We won one of our largest contracts to date to provide program management support for the Guam Department of Transportation/Maritime Administration (MARAD) Commercial Port Improvement Program. In 2012, EA relocated three offices in Baltimore County to our new corporate headquarters, which is LEED Platinum certified, located at 225 Schilling Circle, Hunt Valley, Maryland. The firm continued its regional expansion with a second location in Alaska and a new office in Ann Arbor to provide greater accessibility to our clients and project sites throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes Region. EA finalized its first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report and pledged to develop annual CSR reports in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards. In 2014, we became a first-mover, reorganizing as a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), which is designed to enable for-profit businesses to produce tangible public benefits while operating in a responsible and sustainable manner. EA is the largest 100% employee-owned PBC in the environmental space. During this decade, the firm acquired EnviTreat, a laboratory specializing in treatability studies of industrial wastewaters, and worked closely with our clients to optimize their wastewater treatment operations through our laboratories.

Present

EA Logo
We continue to expand our services and reinforce our commitment as a Public Benefit Corporation. In early 2019, EA was named Best Performer North America in the 2019 EcoVadis Sustainability Leadership Awards, which is dedicated to small and medium enterprises. We are also a corporate sponsor of Water For People, a non-profit organization whose mission is “to promote the development of high-quality drinking water and sanitation services, accessible to all, and sustained by strong communities, businesses, and governments.” EA’s [Our] Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program was recently awarded a “Silver” rating from EcoVadis, a globally recognized independent third-party consultancy that evaluates supply chain environmental and social performance. EA is proud of its successful business model, and our commitment to our communities, clients, and employees. We are well-positioned for exciting growth in the next decade!

Corporate Sustainability

Through more than four decades as a firm dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the natural and built environments, EA has developed a keen social awareness and appreciation for the precious and limited resources that our planet has to offer. As a leader in the environmental field, we hold ourselves accountable in our sustainability initiatives and seek out opportunities to support the communities we serve. Our employees regularly participate in neighborhood and watershed cleanup projects and various youth outreach and mentorship programs focused on materials recycling, waste minimization, energy savings, and related environmental and sustainability topics.

Community Support

“One of the greatest ways EA supports its surrounding community is by investing in the future. EA has an incredibly strong commitment to the young engineers of tomorrow and demonstrates this by leading a Day with an Engineer program that allows area high school students to shadow engineering professionals for a day, and by supporting the Easy as Pi program that brings together local 7th graders to a day of science and engineering demonstrations, and by funding the pursuit of engineering degrees through its multiple scholarships.”
