Hunt Valley, Maryland (5 November 2024)—The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority has awarded EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC, a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, a $3 million contract to provide remedial planning, permitting, engineering design, and construction-management services relating to remediation of contaminated sediment at two Lower Maumee River sites within the Maumee Area of Concern (AOC) (link will open in a new tab). Previously completed studies documented the presence of a variety of constituents of concern, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and other contaminants in the sediment in these areas, which is located near the City of Toledo’s wastewater treatment plant and the sway bridge. The amount of sediment to be dredged totals approximately 240,000 cubic yards of material.
The 130-mile-long Maumee River flows from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Lake Erie just south of the Michigan-Ohio state line. The lower 23 miles of the waterway are located within the Maumee AOC, which was established in 1987 due to habitat loss, industrial impacts, sewage overflows, and decline of fish- and benthic-species diversity and population within the area.
“Our in-house team of sediment remediation technical experts includes scientists, geochemists, modelers, and engineers that specialize in evaluating, designing, and executing remedial alternatives and/or remedies for complex sediment sites,” said Jeff Boltz, PhD, EA Chief Scientist. “We have completed more than $200 million of sediment projects that include removal/dredging, capping, in situ stabilization/treatment, monitored natural recovery, and aquatic habitat restoration.”
Since the early 1990s, EA has performed more than $600 million of work at sites located within the Great Lakes Region. This experience includes sediment characterization, remedial investigation and feasibility study support, bathymetric surveys, remedial design, and habitat restoration efforts in the Maumee River, Detroit River, Rouge River, Clinton River, Manistique River, Muskegon River, and St. Clair River AOCs. EA has successfully provided services under more than 50 task orders for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 since 2014. EA is a licensed Ohio engineering company and will perform work for the Lower Maumee River sites out of its affiliated office in Brighton, Michigan.
