Location: Snow Hill, Maryland
Client: Worchester County Commissioners
EA has provided a wide variety of solid waste and environmental management and engineering services for Worcester County, Maryland since 1987. EA has performed all phases of project development, from siting through design, construction phase services, and ongoing operations consulting. Faced with the pending closure of several existing facilities, the Worcester County Commissioners retained EA to assist in the development of a new landfill facility at the Central Landfill Facility. After evaluating multiple sites, EA completed the Phase I screening and the Phase II Detailed Hydrogeologic Site Analysis. The final design provided for the development of a 17-acre municipal solid waste cell with a single composite high-density polyethylene liner and leachate collection system.
The Central Landfill Facility site involved extensive site planning and civil engineering design services, as well as structural, mechanical, and electrical design. EA was responsible for the site design and layout, the design of a 2-mile paved access roadway and internal roadways, fire protection, electric power distribution, water supply system, sanitary sewer system, stormwater drainage, and leachate collection piping. The facility includes 400,000– and 500,000-gallon leachate storage tanks. Fourteen pumping stations, each positioned at the corner of the landfill cell areas, pump leachate into the storage tanks. The vehicle maintenance building includes both office facilities and employee change and meeting rooms, and a four-bay vehicle maintenance area.
