EA performed a proof-of-concept, two-phase pilot study evaluating ex situ indirect thermal desorption coupled with thermal oxidation technology to achieve “irreversible destruction” of PFAS in solid investigation-derived waste. Treated PFAS-spiked soil and AFFF-spiked soil at two thermal desorption temperatures (500 and 650°C) with off-gas thermal oxidation treatment at 1,000°C for a subset of test runs. Performed pre-/post-soil sampling for PFAS and total oxidizable precursor assay, exhaust gas air sampling for PFAS and hydrogen fluoride, and successfully validated the fluorine mass balance for a controlled spike of 6 PFAS compounds in soil.
