EA led development of the Compendium of Best Management Practices for Environmental Compliance and Stewardship at Transportation Maintenance Facilities (external site opens in a new tab) under a research project sponsored by the Transportation Research Board’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Standing Committee on the Environment. The goal of the project was to benchmark practical, economical, and effective practices to assist transportation agencies with development and optimization of environmental programs, and associated performance goals and metrics.
EA designed a multi-phase survey consisting of electronic questionnaires and direct interviews, supplemented by comprehensive literature review. Input was solicited from one or more transportation agencies in each of the 50 United States. Research was focused on specific effectiveness, cost savings, ease of implementation, and applicability across geographic regions, and highlighted solutions or methods resulting from unique drivers, such as natural resource conservation requirements. The final report of EA’s efforts was published under NCHRP Project 25-25, Task 46 and is available from the Transportation Research Board.
