EA Honored with Multiple EBJ and CCBJ Business Achievement Awards

Hunt Valley, Maryland (23 April)—EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC (EA), a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, was honored with multiple business achievement awards by Environmental Business International, publisher of the Environmental Business Journal® (EBJ) and the Climate Change Business Journal® (CCBJ). These independent business research publications provide strategic market intelligence to the environmental industry.

“We are honored to be recognized with these prestigious EBJ and CCBJ business achievement awards, affirming our commitment to address our client’s most complex environmental challenges,” said Ian MacFarlane, EA President, CEO, and Chair. “From pioneering research and development initiatives to impactful nature-based solutions, our firm’s dedication to environmental stewardship continues to drive positive change and shape a more sustainable future for all.”

Together, the publications honored EA with four Business Achievement Awards as described below:

  • 2024 EBJ Business Achievement Award SealResearch and Development (R&D)—EA’s cutting-edge research projects inform decision making on contaminants of emerging concern, such as PFAS resulting from aqueous film-forming foams and coastal-related, nature-based solutions for climate adaptation and resilience. EA’s R&D practice has expanded 300% since 2017. The opportunity to work on the industry’s most complex challenges—and to impact developing science and engineering—has helped attract and retain Ph.D.-level staff, while supporting professional growth for more than 70 employees participating in R&D initiatives and projects. (EBJ Award for New Practice Area)
  • Spirit Lake Sediment Remediation Project—Located within the St. Louis River Area of Concern in Duluth, Minnesota, the Spirit Lake Great Lakes Legacy Act Sediment Remediation Project (link opens in a new tab) involves a multi-disciplinary team that includes consultants, contractors, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes National Program Office, and their non-federal sponsor. EA led the design and construction oversight to remediate impacted sediment across more than 200 acres in water and on the shoreline of the St. Louis River, while also enhancing wetland habitat and creating new open water. In addressing chemical constituents of concern, environmental cleanup involved extensive hydraulic and mechanical dredging of more than 460,000 cubic yards of sediment, capping of 96 acres, monitoring of 127 acres of impacted sediment, and 138 acres of aquatic habitat restoration plantings. (EBJ Award for Project Merit)
  • 2024 CCBJ Business Achievement Award SealNature-Based Solutions (NBS)—EA is at the forefront of development and implementation of NBS that mimic the characteristics of and occupy the same niche as natural features but are created by human design, engineering, and construction to increase resilience while also providing economic, environmental, and/or social co-benefits. Through cooperative R&D agreements, our team engages with government researchers focusing on coastal and climate resilience. EA has worked with a variety of non-profit, local, state, and federal partners, including the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center Engineering With Nature® program, to assess the impacts of climate change on coastal systems and develop NBS to improve resiliency. Project work spans all coastal geographies of the United States and supports a wide variety of organizations and communities. (CCBJ Award for Adaptation)
  • Port of Seattle Maritime Climate and Air Action Plan – Charting the Course to Zero—The Port of Seattle’s maritime portfolio includes the largest cruise homeport on the U.S. West Coast, home of the U.S. North Pacific Fishing Fleet, recreational boating marinas, an extensive vehicle fleet, and numerous commercial and industrial buildings. In support of their aggressive climate goals, EA worked with the Port to develop a Maritime Climate and Air Action Plan (link opens document in a new tab) (MCAAP) titled “Charting the Course to Zero.” The comprehensive plan addresses maritime sources to achieve a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction target of 50% by 2030, net zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2 sources by 2040, and completely phase out seaport-related emissions by 2050. It also provides a detailed implementation approach for the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy. (CCBJ Award for GHG Mitigation)

“In a year of strong growth and financial performance for the environmental industry in 2023, a number of companies set themselves apart with performance, transactions, or projects that merit special recognition,” said Grant Ferrier, EBJ editor and chair of the Business Achievement Award selection committee. “With energy transition, climate resilience, and new federal programs driving business, as well as traditional environmental market drivers in infrastructure, air quality, remediation, water and wastewater, it is understandable that most companies report growing demand for environmental technology and services.”

These honors were presented live and in person at the EBJ Business Achievement Awards banquet at Environmental Industry Summit XXII on 2-4 April 2024 in San Diego. In addition to MacFarlane, representatives from EA’s senior leadership team—Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Chris Canonica; Senior Vice President and Director, Private Sector, Dick Waterman; and Vice President and Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee Chair, Sarah Babcock—accepted the awards at the event.
