Hunt Valley, Maryland (12 October 2022)—EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC (EA), a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, has entered into a formal collaborative agreement with Johns Hopkins University (JHU) to focus on execution of coastal and climate resilience research.
Coastal areas that feature both human infrastructure and natural resources have become a profound concern with the continuing impacts of climate change, including sea level rise, more intense and frequent storms, and increased precipitation. In addition, the associated projected impacts to human health and underserved communities who are disproportionately impacted stand to be dramatic and far reaching if solutions are not developed to these ongoing changes. Through funding mechanisms, such as the recently passed infrastructure and inflation reduction legislation, significant financial support is expected for coastal resilience in both near- and long-term circumstances.
The alliance was championed by Chris Overcash, P.E., who serves as a senior engineer and Deputy Director of Coastal Resilience at EA. “By working together, both JHU and EA are a building platform for robust knowledge development and exchange in this rapidly expanding field,” he said. “Results may include publications, possible patents, and other intellectual property-related opportunities that will help provide solutions to the challenging problems presented by climate change impacts to our coasts.”
JHU has long been a recognized leader in Chesapeake Bay restoration, including a recent partnership with the RAND Corporation in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-funded MARISA program, which focuses on climate resilience and adaptation for watersheds and coastal areas.
EA is at the forefront of national research in the coastal resilience space, having an extensive project resume that spans several decades. The firm maintains Cooperative Research and Development Agreements with the NOAA National Ocean Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineering Research and Development Centers, Environmental Laboratory/Engineering With Nature® program. These agreements allow EA’s team to engage with government researchers focusing on coastal and climate resilience. EA’s project work spans all coastal geographies of the United States and supports a wide variety of communities including Native Alaskans, non-profits in the Southeast, and Department of Defense installations in the Chesapeake region.
EA was founded in 1973 by former JHU professor Dr. Loren Jensen, and has maintained a close relationship with the institution for more than 49 years, including the Jensen Fellowship program, leadership assistance, as well as providing a variety of instructors within the Engineering for Professionals Program.
