EA Awarded Environmental Contract Supporting Brownfields Redevelopment at Site of Former Coal-Fired Plant in Bridgeport

Oblique aerial photo of former coal-fired plant at Bridgeport Harbor StationHunt Valley, Maryland (11 June 2025)— EA is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a contract by Bridgeport Station Development, LLC for environmental consulting services associated with the brownfields redevelopment of a 33-acre shoreline property formerly known as the Bridgeport Harbor Station coal plant in Connecticut. The scope of the contract involves comprehensive environmental consulting services, including the transfer and compliance with existing permits, remedial investigations, remedial action planning and oversight, stormwater and wastewater discharge compliance, and site closeout reporting. EA will manage various environmental programs and permit compliance for the existing and proposed new permits required prior to facility demolition.

“This opportunity to support Bridgeport Station Development, LLC on the environmental aspects of this significant revitalization project further underscores our commitment to supporting businesses transforming brownfield sites into valuable community assets,” said Bob Casey, Vice President and Director of EA’s Northeast Business Unit. “The redevelopment of the Bridgeport site will not only enhance the local environment but also contribute to the economic revitalization of the area.”

The former coal-fired Bridgeport Harbor Station has a long history, dating back to its opening in the 1950s when it first provided energy to southwestern Connecticut residents and businesses. The plant ceased operations in 2021 and has since been a source of blight and stifled investment in the neighborhood. The state of Connecticut’s Community Investment Fund is funding $22.5 million for demolition and remediation of the plant.

EA has extensive expertise and experience in brownfields redevelopment. For decades, our professionals have been developing and implementing risk-based remediation, site closure, and site reuse strategies that are the essence of today’s approach to brownfields. EA’s comprehensive services include remedial investigations and conceptual site model development, ecological and human health risk assessment, feasibility studies, remedial design, permitting and construction, remedial process optimization, long-term remedy management, and public outreach. Through these initiatives, EA has successfully contributed to achieving the ultimate goals of all brownfields programs: environmental cleanup and risk mitigation, economic development, and urban revitalization.
