Hunt Valley, Maryland (24 July 2024)—EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC (EA), a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, is pleased to announce that the Price Landfill Superfund Site (link will open in new window) and its operators, including EA’s Kevin Pope, have been honored with Earnest Ecker Awards for Excellence in Industrial Wastewater Treatment by the New Jersey Water Environment Association (NJWEA). Presented annually, the awards recognize outstanding performance in the design or operation of industrial wastewater treatment systems.
Since 2014, EA has been responsible for long-term monitoring, operations, and maintenance for the site’s groundwater treatment facility consisting of 17 extraction wells operating at approximately 300 gallons per minute. Treatment has significantly reduced concentrations of chlorobenzenes, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, total xylenes, and other volatile organic compounds in groundwater since operations were initiated. EA’s work is currently being performed for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and contracted through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Kansas City District.
“EA has a long history of performing operations and maintenance of treatment systems at contaminated groundwater sites across the country,” said Gordy Porter, Senior Vice President and Director of EA’s Site Characterization and Remediation business unit. “At many of these sites, including Price Landfill, we assumed responsibility of plant operations and evaluated and implemented optimization measures to reduce operational costs and maximize treatment efficiency, while ensuring protection to the local community.”
The Ernest Ecker Awards recognize excellence in industrial wastewater treatment with consideration of a site’s compliance and safety records, training, operating efficiency, maintenance, design, innovation, waste minimization, and industry-wide applications. Awardees are selected by NJWEA’s Industrial Environmental Quality Committee, which includes industry and manufacturer representatives, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection personnel, industrial operators, publicly owned treatment works and industrial pretreatment coordinators, attorneys, and members of the consulting community. The honors were presented to site operations, consultant, and EPA representatives at the 106th NJWEA John J. Lagrosa Annual Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey in May. EA Team members Michael Owen and Jose Nieves were on hand to accept the awards.
The 26-acre Price Landfill Superfund site is located in Pleasantville and Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. Following closure of the original sand and gravel mining operation, the site began accepting drummed and bulk liquid waste, alongside municipal waste, in the first half of the 1970s. It is estimated that over 9 million gallons of chemical waste were disposed of at the Price Landfill during site operations, resulting in soil and groundwater contamination. The site was listed on the EPA National Priorities List in 1983. EA’s project team, including Kevin Pope, a New Jersey N3 certified wastewater treatment operator, is part of the team responsible for operation and maintenance of the site’s groundwater treatment facility.
