An image of the cover of EA’s 2022 Carbon Footprint ReportHunt Valley, Maryland (14 September 2023)—EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC (EA), a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, has released its 2022 Carbon Footprint Report. As an employee-owned public benefit corporation (PBC), EA is committed to the tenets of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) through operational decision-making, voluntary reporting, and advisory services to public and private sector clients. EA’s Carbon Footprint Report, first published in 2009, documents the firm’s carbon accounting standards, operational and supply chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and carbon offsets.

“Our annual Carbon Footprint Report reflects EA’s dedication to transparency and environmental responsibility,” said Brian Lesinski, Senior Vice President and Director, Corporate Social Responsibility. “It outlines our enterprise-level carbon emissions, reductions, and purchased offsets, and provides valuable insights for creating a roadmap for continuous operational improvement to analyze and understand primary emissions sources year-over-year.”

As a 100% employee-owned PBC, reporting operational impacts to the firm’s carbon footprint supports achievement of public benefits articulated in EA’s PBC charter. This Carbon Footprint Report is intended to provide an assessment of GHG emissions arising from EA’s nationwide operations, including an evaluation of emissions associated with the company’s total supply chain (referred to as Scope 3, Other Indirect GHG Emissions). Emissions are calculated using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Center for Corporate Climate Leadership’s Simplified GHG Emissions Calculator in accordance with World Resources Institute protocols, the most widely used industry standards for calculating GHG emissions.

The firm’s total carbon footprint in calendar year 2022 is estimated at 24,825 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (commonly represented as MTCO2e). Approximately 4% of EA’s carbon footprint was offset through purchased offsets, including Green-e®-certified Renewable Energy Certificates. EA’s top three emissions sources in 2022 included Purchased Goods and Services (72.8%),Fuel and Energy-Related Activities (12.1%), and Employee Business Travel (4.1%)—all associated with EA’s Scope 3 (supply chain) emissions.
