Since 2015, EA staff have provided third-party reporting/attestation reviews for Green Marine verification at maritime facilities throughout the United States. Green Marine is a voluntary, transparent, and inclusive environmental, social, and governance certification program for marine facilities throughout North America. Participating shipowners, ports, terminals, Seaway corporations, and shipyards maintain certification by reporting 12 environmental performance indicators that document their continuous efforts to reduce their environmental footprint. An annual self-assessment that benchmarks their performance is then externally reviewed by a third-party verifier biennially. Each year, they benchmark their environmental performance through a Green Marine self-assessment of environmental performance, which is externally verified by a third-party verifier biannually.
EA staff include an approved verifier, who conducts scheduled verification assessments with the active participation of the facility owner. The Green Marine verification assessment consists of:
- Physical review of the facility
- Interviews with various participant management/employees
- Observation of employee work practices
- Review of documented plans, procedures, programs, and training
- Examination of select facility records and documents
- Verifier’s professional judgment of management practices
Verification reviews result in development of a summary report in accordance with Green Marine’s guidelines. In addition to an executive summary and profile on the owner and facility, the report documents the purpose, scope, and methodology used by the verifier as well as results and recommendations for each applicable performance indicator.
