EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC Prepares Students for Future STEM Education
Hunt Valley, Maryland (1 April 2016)—EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC (EA), a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, today announced that for the 14th consecutive year, the company participated in a Day With an Engineer. This 1-day outreach activity provides Baltimore area high school students with a workplace experience in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
This year, EA hosted 20 students and provided them with a real-life learning experience. Tasked with completing a mock environmental project, the students experienced a full day of activities, which included performing experiments at EA’s ecotoxicology laboratory, participating in field equipment demonstrations, researching available information, and collaborating with EA scientists and engineers. At the end of the day, the students put the skills they learned to the test and presented their solution to an EA professional, acting in the role of client for the mock project.
“It was fantastic to interact with such highly motivated students,” said Regina Cagle Irr, P.E., Environmental Engineer, who led EA’s efforts. “The focused activities provided them with an appreciation for the level of teamwork and technical expertise necessary to complete a project. It is our hope that many of these students were inspired to pursue a STEM education.”
“As a public benefit corporation, EA is committed to supporting community events intended to increase student exposure to STEM,” added Brian Lesinski, Vice President and Director of EA’s Corporate Social Responsibility program. “Our team of more than 30 employee volunteers exemplified that commitment as they worked together to implement this great day of hands-on activities and mentoring.”
Hosted by the Baltimore Post of the Society of American Military Engineers and held in conjunction with Engineers Week, Day with an Engineer continues to grow in popularity. This year, it attracted over 70 students. Students must be nominated and complete an application to be eligible to participate.
