Since 2009, EA has supported various regional sediment management (RSM) projects throughout the State of Hawaii for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)–Honolulu District. In 2009, a Preliminary RSM Plan was completed for Southeast Oahu for the Diamond Head to Pearl Harbor (D2P) region. In 2010 and 2011, preliminary RSM efforts were focused on 11.5 miles of coastline on the island of Maui in the Kahului and Kihei regions, and 16.5 miles of coastline on the island of Kauai in the Kekaha and Poipu regions. This work is accomplished through a multidisciplinary project delivery team that includes the USACE–Honolulu District, State of Hawaii Department of Natural Resources Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands, a specialty coastal engineering firm, and researchers at the University of Hawaii School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.

The purpose of RSM projects is to optimize the use of sediment resources by understanding littoral cell processes with the goal of preserving and restoring beaches within the various regions. The projects involve coastal process modeling, analysis of historical data, and extensive mapping using remote sensing techniques. The results of these studies include Preliminary RSM Plans, sediment budgets, and an inventory of ocean sand sources. As part of the project, workshops were offered on the islands of Oahu, Maui, and Kauai to present the findings of these studies to federal, state, and local agencies as well as the public and other key stakeholders.

EA and joint venture partner, Helber, Hastert, and Fee, were presented with an Award of Excellence at the 2010 USACE Engineering Workshop in recognition of the exceptional work on the D2P RSM Plan as well as other projects completed for the USACE. Awards
