EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACT SURVEYS
U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity
The U.S. Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) operates 192 schools in 14 districts located in 12 foreign countries, 7 states, and the U.S. territories of Guam and Puerto Rico. In Europe alone, there are 81 schools with 5,220 teachers and 36,000 students. To comply with federal regulations, an Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) survey is required at each school every 3 years, consisting of a full re-inspection and creation of an AHERA Asbestos Management Plan.
To support this effort, EA traveled to U.S. military bases in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany to survey 25 schools, amounting to approximately 2.35 million square ft of space. Our inspectors/ management planners utilized previous Asbestos Management Plan information and infused new data into the reports to illustrate the current structure of each school. Data were organized and analyzed in an EA-created Microsoft Access Database. CADD drawings were employed to display the asbestos sample locations and were included in the report. EA is now developing a field tool to access AHERA survey information for use worldwide at all DoDEA facilities.
