EA Volunteers to Help Make Adopt-A-Stream Day a Success
Hunt Valley, Maryland (9 May 2011)—Honolulu staff
members of EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc. (EA) celebrated
“We are delighted that our Honolulu office employees have taken it upon themselves to remain so actively involved in the Adopt-A-Stream Program,” said Michael Battle, EA’s Chief Operating Officer. “Participating in a community-based ecological restoration effort truly resonates with our staff, and aligns nicely with EA’s core values as an environmental consulting practice.”
EA volunteers joined more than 70 others to help improve Kawa Stream in Kaneohe, Hawaii.
To reduce erosion and decrease pollution entering Kawa Stream, the group conducted weeding, mulching, and re-vegetating the stream bank with native ahuawa and pohinahina seedlings in an effort to eventually restore the stream back to a healthy ecosystem. EA staff worked alongside high school students to assist them with their planting activities, while pointing out key water quality issues. Earth Day volunteers also collected water quality samples and helped with aquatic surveys.
This community stewardship event was part of the Adopt-A-Stream Program sponsored by the City and County of Honolulu, Department of Environmental Services, Stormwater Quality Branch, with the goals of improving the health of Hawaii’s watersheds and educating the community about water quality issues. Program components include stormwater management, pollution prevention, reducing construction site runoff, reducing illicit discharges, public education and outreach, and water quality monitoring. EA staff works to support these efforts and volunteers at various Adopt-A-Stream events.
