EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC to Help National Park Service Manage Breach in Fire Island National Seashore’s Coastline
Hunt Valley, Maryland (24 November 2015)—EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC (EA), a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, announced today that it has been awarded a contract by the National Park Service (NPS) to support the development of a Breach Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (Plan/EIS) for a breach at Fire Island National Seashore. The development of the Plan/EIS is slated to take 1 year.
Located within the Seashore’s Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the breach was caused by Hurricane Sandy back in October 2012. Since then, NPS has worked with partners to monitor the breach and now is investigating options for its future management. The Plan/EIS will evaluate the impacts of feasible alternatives, including no action, for the management of the breach. The planning process will include opportunities for public input; consultations with federal, state, and local agencies and tribes; and the engagement of subject matter experts.
As prime consultant, EA is responsible for production of the draft and final Plan/EIS as well as the Record of Decision. Specific tasks include coordinating with government agency personnel and subject matter experts, participating in project meetings, logging and compiling project documentation, communicating project progress, and analyzing public comments.
“The Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness is New York State’s only federal wilderness area; so, we are honored to have been selected to undertake this important project on behalf of NPS,” said Suzie Boltz, EA’s Project Manager. “We look forward to working with NPS to build a science-based understanding of the breach and the extent of impacts of the proposed management alternatives.”
