EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc. Mentors High School Students through “Day with an Engineer”

Hunt   Valley,   Maryland   (26  February   2014)
EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc. (EA), a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, recently participated in Day with an Engineer, as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to promote engineering and science education. EA has been actively involved with this program, which is sponsored by the Baltimore Post of the Society of American Military Engineers, for 12 consecutive years.

EA hosted a group of high school students at its corporate headquarters in Hunt Valley for a day of activities and interaction with staff members. In the morning, the students were presented with a mock project and spent the day learning about the design process and the tools required to complete engineering tasks. Through interaction with EA engineers and scientists, the students were taught about site topography and site characterization, geographic information systems, regulatory and permitting requirements, water quality, infrastructure design, cost estimating, computer modeling, and even presentation tips. The students also had the opportunity to conduct mock tests in EA’s Ecotoxicology Laboratory.

“Our goal is to create a detailed picture of what it is like to be an engineer by providing a hands-on, client-driven project experience,” said Regina Cagle, E.I.T. project engineer and co-organizer of this year’s event. “We had a very engaged and inquisitive group of students, and hope that today’s activities sparked an interest in a career based in engineering or science.”

“By illustrating how critical it is to integrate engineering, science, and technology to develop solutions, our employees presented a day-long program reflective of our corporate mission,” stated Michael Battle, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “While Day with an Engineer is a great learning opportunity for the students, it is also a great team building exercise for our employees. It’s a win-win for the company, our staff members, and the young people being mentored.”

In addition to its participation in Day with an Engineer, EA promotes engineering and science education through college scholarships, internships, Fellowship Programs, and employee participation as judges for science fairs and speakers for career events. EA’s active involvement is firmly based in the company’s sustainability commitment, which encompasses educating today’s youth to help solve tomorrow’s environmental problems.
