EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc.’s Corporate Headquarters Awarded LEED® Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council

Hunt    Valley,    Maryland   (31   May   2013)   — EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc. (EA), a leading provider of interdisciplinary environmental services, announced that, in keeping with its corporate commitment to sustainability, the Commercial Interior (CI) of its new corporate headquarters has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). EA’s 57,500 square foot headquarters is on the third and fourth floors in Merritt Properties’ Schilling Green II located at 225 Schilling Circle in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Earlier this year, Merritt Properties earned LEED Platinum certification for the Schilling Green II, the highest level of recognition that can be achieved for a newly constructed building.

“As an environmental consulting firm, we viewed it as paramount to take the steps necessary to ensure our corporate headquarters and mid-Atlantic regional center fully reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and energy conservation. Achieving LEED Gold certification for our interior space demonstrates that commitment,” said Ian MacFarlane, EA’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

Some of the features of EA’s headquarters’ space include:

  • Use of low- to no-volatile organic compound emitting products for interior finishes, such as flooring, paints, adhesives, and sealants
  • 87% of lighting controls have occupancy sensors, providing 13% in lighting energy savings
  • 37% water use reduction with water efficient restroom and kitchen fixtures, as well as fountains equipped to encourage the use of reusable containers
  • 26% savings through the use of energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, including a subfloor air distribution system
  • Green power credits purchased for 100% of energy use for 2 years
  • More than 80% of computers and information technology equipment and appliances are ENERGY STAR-rated and/or EPEAT®-certified
  • Comprehensive recycling program covering all primary waste streams, including electronics and batteries
  • Green housekeeping practices that reduce the possibility for compromising indoor air quality
  • A Public Education Program consisting of self-guided walking tours for EA’s LEED Gold certified interior office space, as well as Merritt’s LEED Platinum certified Schilling Green II.

EA’s offices in Schilling Green II are on the campus of Schilling Square, which offers direct access to public transit and provides designated parking spaces for low emission vehicles and bicycles, as well as charging stations for electric-powered vehicles. Schilling Green II provides EA’s employees access to a modern fitness center complete with shower and changing facilities. A healthy options eatery is also located onsite.

LEED is the foremost program for the design, construction, and operation of green buildings. Over 52,000 projects are currently participating in the commercial and institutional LEED rating systems, comprising over 9.9 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 135 countries.

LEED-CI is the industry standard for green design and construction of tenant improvements. LEED-CI is an integrated design tool used to minimize environmental impact and maximize occupant comfort and performance of tenant spaces. As an organization that leases, but does not occupy the entire building, LEED certification allows EA’s commitment to sustainability to be recognized. EA’s office space was scored and ranked based on six categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovative applications.
